Traveling these days can be rather expensive. When money is tight, as you know, it is essential to be able to find ways to still travel – but how to do it for less money. There are many ways to travel cheap, and the more time you have to prepare, the better. Here are 6 tips to help you save money and travel for less on your next trip.

1) Travel in the Off Season

Depending on what you plan to do, you can often save a lot of money if you do not travel during the peak season. Most hotels lower their prices considerably during the off-peak season, and you can get the same services for much less. If you are going to another country, you may also be able to rent a home for less than the cost of a hotel.

2) Stay Closer to Home

Instead of traveling far, you can still have the same fun somewhere closer to home. Get a nice hotel that is centrally located to some great places you want to see nearby, and then visit them one per day. Eat in your hotel room, plan some other low cost activities or sights to fill in the time, and save even more money.

3) Use Coupons for Bigger Discounts

If you are planning on visiting some special places, or even staying at certain hotels, you may be able to find coupons or discount packages that will enable you to get what you want – but for considerably less. This is where advance planning can really pay off. You may be surprised at the amount of some discounts that are available.

Coupons can be used for special events, places, restaurants, hotels, activities, and so much more. In some places, the hotels also have a lot of features that would be cheaper than going anywhere else, such as special entertainment, free food, pools, fitness centers, and much more.

4) Buy Passes for Multiple Days

If you know that you probably will be going to a specific place more than once, you will want to buy a multiple-day pass to get discount tickets. This is a great way to save money at numerous places.

5) Travel As a Group

Taking Advantage of group discounts can help you save money, too. If you are a senior, or a student, etc., most likely there is some way to get group discount. It is often better to travel with friends or relatives, anyway, than it would be to travel alone.

6) Get a Travel Credit Card

This can be either a travel credit card for a car, or an airlines credit card – depending on what kind of trip you are looking for. Some of these cards also give free cruises, too. Many of this type of credit card offers rewards, a number of points for every dollar spent on the card. Not only can your points reduce your costs on cheap air tickets or vacation packages for this trip, but any charges put on the credit card while you travel can help you get discount travel on your next trip, as well.

This will work best to your advantage if you do not keep a running balance on the card to avoid any interest charges, and if you are able to get a free trip without having to wait too long. Also, make sure that you use the points before they expire – if they do, and watch out for blackout periods.
